Funky, Junky and Political - Cut Up Film and Video Culture in Bay Area Underground and Beyond
Wednesdays, Oct. 18-Dec. 13, 7-10pm (No class Nov. 8)

Bay Area film and video makers have a decades-old tradition of experimenting and playing with found footage: cutting it, rearranging it, making moving collages. Filmmakers tend to be media archeologists, and media activists. Students will be taken on a journey through some of the most exciting collage-essay films made in and around San Francisco, and will also be able to download and re-edit public-domain archival films themselves.

David Cox is a filmmaker, writer and artists who lives in the Mission District of San Francisco. Since 2005 he has taught digital motion picture production at Cogswell Polytechnical College in Sunnyvale. Mr. Cox's award winning films were recently screened on Free Speech TV across the USA. These include PUPPENHEAD (1990) and OTHERZONE (1998) as well as more recent collage-essay work using public domain archival material from the internet. His PhD research examines the world of culture jamming and media activism and this was also the subject of his book (by Pluto Press Australia) called “SignWars: The Culture Jammers Strike Back!”.

Audio Collage DOODS: "The Secret City"

Under the moniker "The Department of Ongoing Digital Situations" in 1994 I recorded some audio collage aimed at playing out what were then pressing concerns. Would the emergent public resource known as the Internet and the world wide web go commercial? Would public space prevail in cities rapidly undergoing gentrification? Was not dada and situationism the best model on offer for an alternative basis for society?

My psuedonym at DOODS was Alberto Tsara.

In this audio collage, made public on archive.org, hear the voices of Greil Marcus (in an interview I did with him in 1994), Bruce Sterling, Natalie Jeremijenko, William Gibson, Liz Canning, Andrew Boucher, Andrew Garton, and audio samples from
Bert Deling's classic masterpiece movie "DALMAS".

"Darwin vs. the Creationists"

Are you sick, sick, sick of public schools, universities, and museums carrying on the "godless indoctrination" known as evolutionary theory? If so, best steer clear of Other Cinema's program "Darwin vs. the Creationists," where your views will be snarked at — hard. On the side of sanity, there will be an extra-rare screening of Evolution, the 1923 oddity by future animators Max Fleischer (Betty Boop, Popeye) and Willis O'Brien (the original King Kong) that uses nature footage, stop-action dinos, and title cards to explain how the solar system, Earth, planetary life, and man got where they are today. This quaint but still pretty dang solid overview will be accompanied live by audio collagist David Cox. On the "creation science" side you'll get various eye-opening, prayer-inducing treats, including excerpts from 1988's "documentary" The Evolution Conspiracy (see evidence tying it to New Agers, Communism, and — horror — the ACLU!) alongside 1980 fundamentalist post-rapture thriller Image of the Beast, which proves that computers are Satan's toolbox. It is certainly too bad when our academic institutions are threatened by retrograde superstition…as if some forces in our society were afraid to accept the fact that humans are also part of the animal kingdom. Around the time of the Scopes trial, Max Fleischer turned his considerable talents from Betty Boop and Popeye to advancing an enlightened view of human development. Here’s the premiere revival of his legendary 1923 masterwork, Evolution, a courageous cinematic initiative, that in fact includes stop-motion dinosaur footage from Willis O’Brien, projected in gloriously tinted 16mm, with musical accompaniment by David Cox! We open with a newsreel from that infamous “Monkey Trial,” plus a Joseph Campbell clip on genesis myths and—believe it or not—a crackpot Fundamentalist screed, The Evolution Conspiracy. PLUS a collection-plate of assorted religious anomalies, including Pat Robertson, Satanic backward-masking, and a sneak peek at Wandering Eye’s new doc on Christian wrestling, Taking Satan to the Mat!! A portion of the proceeds goes to the ACLU.

ARCHIMEDIA's web site is a repository of the ideas, films and writings of this extraordinary collaboration between husband and wife team Molly Hankwitz & David Cox.

ACHIMEDIA is a research and design collective examining the overlap between media, architecture and public space. We are influenced by the Situationist International and the British design group, Archigram among others. ARCHiMEDIA is the combination of architecture and media. We investigate the margins of media culture and examine the detritus of media and urban history as it relates to architecture. Our media archeological project seeks to identify the ways in which urban life is being affected by, and in turn affecting, the way media are used. In our digital, wireless, connected world, there seems to be few opportunities to study the juggernaut of digital changes. ARCHiMEDIA sets itself the task of theorizing, conceptualising and proposing ideas for urban space which utilize media in all their forms. Screens, interfaces, urban designs, kiosks, microtechnologies; and alternative modes of thinking for shelter, street life and other aspects of life in the modern city.

Creatures from the Stars

Creatures from the Stars is an interactive story by David Cox. It was originally done
as a HyperCard stack in 1994 on my beloved Powerbook duo 230, and then became a web site of only 1 megabyte in size!

It follows the story of of Fansworth Feldrin and his quest to avert a global catastrophe. He is helped by the dead, who use software to enable the living to contact them over the internet. "Creatures From the Stars" is sceance fiction - a low tech, high concept oddessey to the Other Side...

It was published in 1999 by the Australian Film Commission and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Arts Online project as part of the 'stuffart' project.

Cogswell College in Sunnyvale, California where I work just furnished me with an HP iPAQ device which lets me take pictures, make phone calls, know where I am with GPS and do email. Problem is I'm staring at this tiny screen and forgetting who I am and what I'm doing on BART (24th St to Millbrae)
Caltrain (Millbrae to Mountainview) and V-Line (Mountainview to Lockheed Martin).

I look around and everyone else is staring into screens.

Its a mediated spectacular zone of alienation, in motion!

Its all part of Cogswell's Pocket Cinema project, which I'm heading up.
See this infomercial to get the heads up on what it is.

You move through space while you watch movies, which in turn relate to where you are and what you've already seen. Its the Situationist D?rive, but with movies and GPS devices.

PUPPENHEAD (7'50)

Berlin, 1934: JOHN FLAUS plays Goethe, the puppeteer whose mechanical clockwork knife-throwing act is under surviellence by a slimy SS agent (Heinze Boek). The showdown comes at a New York presentation of the show.

Made at Swinburne School of Film & Television (now VCA Film School, Victoria, Australia) in 1990.

The film went on to appear at fourteen international film festivals and was screened at the opening of the 1991 New York Film Festival.

Festivals include - New York, London, Annecy, Turin, Hong Kong, Seattle, Oberhausen.

Puppenhead also won the ATOM award for innovation, and was nominated for three Australian Film Institute Awards - best film in non-feature category, best sound in non-feature category and best editing in non-feature category.

Puppenhead was picked up by Canal+ in Spain.
